Boating Group Seeks Lease Renewal
CROMWELL - The Outboard Association will make its case tonight for the renewal of its lease, but a Commission appointed to deliberate on the matter wants to consider all possibilities for use of the town-owned property.

The Association’s August 8 meeting-to take place at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall-will be held in executive session so that members can go through the organization’s finances, said Commission Chair and Town Councilor Ed Wenners.

The current lease-extended in July-will expire on December 31.

â€"All options are on the table,” Wenners said over the phone. â€"We’re looking at everything.”

Before the lease’s extension, the Association-a nonprofit-paid the town $500 per year to launch boats off the docks at the 2 River Road building, while using their own funds to maintain necessary structures. The organization agreed to pay $1500 for the July through December timeframe.

One of the questions the Committee will have to address is what to do about boat operators who are not members of the Association, according to Wenners.

â€"There are some people that would love to launch a boat, but do not want to join,” Wenners said. â€"If we go with a new lease, we’ll have to look at a way to accommodate them.”

Historically, the Association has not allowed nonmembers to use the docks, he said.

A few years ago, a different committee offered to allow nonmembers to pay a small fee to the town in exchange for access to the docks, but the Association rejected the proposal.

â€"We’ll take another look at that and see if there’s anything we can salvage,” Wenners said.

Town Councilor Al Waters-Commodore for the Association-estimated that their maintenance of the docks saves the town â€"a couple hundred thousand dollars, easily”.

â€"Who’s going to pay for that? The people who don’t have boats,” Waters said over the phone.

The Association currently has more than 200 members-around half of which reside in Cromwell-according to Waters.

The organization has been hoping to perform some fixes to the property, but is waiting on the status of the lease, he said.
