WHS Student Publishes Poetry Book
WETHERSFIELD - Famed author Robert Byrne once said that â€"the purpose of life is a life with purpose”.

It can be a goal, a dream, or just a direction to channel one’s passion, or pain.

For Marisa Vasconcelos, it was writing--or, specifically, poetry.

â€"I really like poems that rhyme,” Vasconcelos, a senior at Wethersfield High School said. â€"I like the way they flow, the way they look.”

Call it poetry in motion--literally. No, call it poetry emotion--the fluctuation of highs, lows, moments of elation and despair experienced by someone battling depression. That’s what A Fragile Mind, Vasconcelos’ recently self-published book of about 50 to 60 poems, was written to capture. And for Vasconcelos, it comes from firsthand experience.

â€"It’s very hard to get up in the morning, let alone find something that you love,” Vasconcelos said. â€"Writing has definitely helped me cope. They’re from what I’ve been through. It’s how I cope with it--how I’ve coped with it in negative ways and positive ways.

What she’s been through includes being bullied in eighth grade, but she’s always had an outlet through writing. Vasconcelos just wasn’t sure how she wanted to utilize that until later on.

â€"I’ve always liked writing,” she said. â€"English was always my favorite subject.”

Until her sophomore year in high school, she had relied on a personal journal to get her thoughts down on paper. Then she discovered poetry through one of her classes.

â€"I never wrote poems,” Vasconcelos said. â€"I look back at my old poems and laugh because some of them are not that good, but I’ve definitely improved.”

In a way, the book is like another journal-one that she wants the world and particularly those with similar experiences, to see.

â€"I was hoping to connect with other people and let them know that they’re not alone,” Vasconcelos said.

The book is available for purchase on www.Amazon.com .
